The engine was again stripped and overhauled with further additions of a high capacity oil pump, deep finned aluminium sump, electric fuel pump and fuel pressure control valve. More recently a set of twin Dell'Orto carburettors have replaced the quad SU's (which are available with the car) and a stainless steel exhaust has been mated to the Derrington extractor manifold. The car was then refinished in British Racing Green and a new tan Yarwoods leather interior added. To reduce weight, a set of fibreglass wings were also added and a steering rack conversion replaced the TR steering box to improve the drive.
In 1998 a full restoration was carried out and during this period TR3a front and rear aprons were fitted as well as the addition of a set of Minilite style wheels. The TR competed in the occasional Sprint event one such event was in the May 1964 British Hotrod Association drag race meeting at Duxford Aerodrome, where it finished 2 nd. In 1964 the vendor acquired the car complete with an SAH works pattern hardtop. Competition suspension modifications were also carried out. At this time a Colin Smith Big Port Head was fitted with further modifications of a four branch Derrington exhaust manifold, quadruple 1/34 inch SU carburettors and a cold air bonnet scoop. All engine internals were lightened, balanced and the capacity uprated to 2.2 litres. The car was originally destined for Australia but somehow managed to be diverted to a UK dealership.ĭuring circa 1962/3 the engine was rebuilt for competition.
